Kansas City Chiefs

1966

(15-Jan-1967) Super Bowl I - Kansas City Chiefs vs Green Bay Packers - The Packers launched the Super Bowl series by whipping Kansas City's American Football League champions 35-10 behind the passing of Bart Starr, the receiving of Max McGee and a key interception by All-Pro safety Willie Wood. Vince Lombardi's repeating NFL champions broke open the game with three second-half touchdowns, the first of which was set up by Wood's 50-yard return of an interception to the Chiefs' 5-yard line with the Packers leading by only 14-10. The pass, authored by the Chiefs' Len Dawson, had been intended for Kansas City tight end Fred Arbanas. McGee, filling in for ailing Boyd Dowler (injured on the Packers' first offensive series) after having caught only four passes all season, snared seven from Starr for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Pitts ran for two other scores, counting one on a five-yard run in the third quarter and the other on a one-yard bolt in the final period. The Chiefs' 10 points came in the second quarter, the only touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Dawson to Curtis McClinton. Starr completed 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns and was chosen the game's most valuable player. His scoring strikes came on a 37-yard collaboration with McGee in the first quarter and a 13-yard pitch to the aging end in the decisive third period. The Packers collected $15,000 per man and the Chiefs $7,500 apiece - the largest single-game shares in the history of team sports at the time. New Version with no freezing thru out - The new version includes a ton more footage and fills in the missing plays from the previous version. 1988

(08-19-88) Kansas City Chiefs @ Green Bay Packers (M) - preseason - Randy Wright seemed to be the odd man out, at least for the starting job as quarterback of the Packers. Then came Friday night. Make that the fourth quarter with the Packers trailing the Kansas City Chiefs 21-7. Enter Wright, who drove Green Bay to a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns and an eventual 21-21 overtime tie. "I came in fighting for my job," said Wright, who completed 11 of 24 passes, including a 43-yard touchdown pass to top draft choice Sterling Sharpe. Lindy Infante will name his starting quarterback for the regular season Monday. Neither Marc Wilson, who played the first half and was intercepted twice, nor Don Majkowski, who was l-for-7 in the third quarter with minus yards passing, was impressive Friday. In the overtime, the Chiefs reached the Packers 32 on their first possession behind Frank Seurer, only to be turned away by a holding penalty. That was the deepest penetration either team made. Kansas City had a 434-250 edge in total yardage. - added June 2007

(09-17-90) Kansas City Chiefs @ Denver Broncos - A MNF thriller as the Broncos, behind an unbelievably daring 4th & 10 John Elway bomb to WR Vance Johnson (6-150) with just a minutes left in the game, pull out a 24-23 win over KC on last play FG. This is also the game where Bronco Safety Steve Atwater delivered what was voted as one of the NFL's all time greatest hits that is seen in all the highlight films these days when he absolutely DECKS Chief RB "The Nigerian Nightmare" Christian Okoye on a third quarter run. KC loses despite QB Steve DeBerg (26-45, 2tds, 395yds) and WR Stephon Paige (10-206) having big nights, as does Denver RB Bobby Humphrey (19-132). - added January, 2008

(09-23-90) Kansas City Chiefs @ Green Bay Packers - Christian Okoye ran 5 yards for a second-quarter touchdown, and Stan Petry returned an interception 33 yards for another score with three minutes left as the Kansas City Chiefs used a dominating defense to beat the Green Bay Packers 17-3. The Chiefs also recovered two fumbles, sacked Don Majkowski six times in his first start of the season and blocked a punt. Albert Lewis made his seventh career punt block and Louis Cooper picked up the ball and returned to Packers' 5 with 12:09 left in the game. Majkowski wound up 19-for-31 for 171 yards and two interceptions for Green Bay. It was the first time since 1971 that Green Bay had played three straight home games to start a season. - added June 2007

(11-08-93) Green Bay Packers @ Kansas City Chiefs - MNF - With no Joe Montana, the Kansas City Chiefs needed the defense to provide some offense. So NT Dan Saleaumua took over where the injured Montana left off. Saleaumua ran 16 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, with a fumble stripped by Derrick Thomas from Brett Favre, to set the Chiefs on a 17-point run that gave them a 23-16 victory over Green Bay on Monday night. Then the 6-foot, 300-pounder forced a fumble by Darrell Thompson that Tracy Rogers recovered in the end zone just as the Packers threatened to go ahead with just under six minutes left. An interception by Martin Bayless, Kansas City's third of the game, ended Green Bay's final threat with 1:40 left. The victory kept the Chiefs in first place in the NFC West and ended a three-game winning streak for the Packers. But it wasn't easy. The Kansas City offense was limited to just 60 yards in the half and could have gone off trailing by more than the 9-3 score by which the Packers led. In fact, the defense produced those points, a 23-yard field goal by Nick Lowery. Green Bay, meanwhile, failed on a first and goal from the 2 when Thomas forced a third down fumble and chose to kick a field goal on fourth down from the Kansas City 1 in the final minute of the half and settled for Chris Jacke's field goals of 23, 51 and 19 yards. Then, on Green Bay's first offensive play after intermission, Thomas broke behind Favre and swiped at the ball, knocking it straight at the feet of Saleaumua. He grabbed it like a shortstop and rambled 16 yards into the end zone to give the Chiefs the lead. It was the Packers' first Monday Night game since 1986. - Includes MNF pre-game (Quality 9.5)

(10-12-03) Green Bay Packers @ Kansas City Chiefs - For once, the Kansas City Chiefs' wild finish didn't involve Dante Hall. Even with their star kick returner being kept out of the end zone for the first time in a month, the Chiefs overcame a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, then came out on top after a crazy closing sequence to beat the Packers 40-34. Here were the final three plays of the game: Cletidus Hunt blocked Morten Andersen's 48-yard field goal attempt with 9 minutes, 9 seconds left in OT to give the Packers (3-3) possession at their 39 and the wind at their back. On first down, Packers running back Ahman Green — who ran 26 times for 139 yards — fumbled the ball, and Kansas City recovered. Chiefs quarterback Trent Green threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Kennison with 8:42 seconds left in the extra period. Simple as that, Kansas City improved to 6-0. Free safety Jerome Woods, who had a 79-yard touchdown interception return in the fourth quarter, knocked the ball loose from Ahman Green. It bounced right into the hands of linebacker Mike Maslowski. Then, with the Packers expecting run, Kennison juked Bhawoh Jue along the right sideline and caught Green's pass for the winning score. Green Bay had won 56 straight games at home after building a double-digit lead, but they blew two of them Sunday, 14-0 in the first quarter and 31-14 in the fourth. - Includes commercials and halftime - (Quality 8.5)

Favre then found Jennings for a 60-yard touchdown and a 23-22 lead and the defense would come up huge to prevent a Chiefs comeback with an interception for a TD. Favre went 24-of-34, with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the game. The win would make Favre only the 3rd QB in history to beat every team in the league, the other two QBs are Payton Manning and Tom Brady who both also accomplished this feat in the 2007 season. Donald Driver led the team with five catches for 99 yards, including a 44-yard one-handed grab made between two defenders - added January, 2008
