(10-02-66) Detroit Lions @ Green Bay Packers - Bart Starr tossed two touchdown bombs and an opportunistic defense set the stage for three Don Chandler field goals as the unbeaten Green Bay Packers upended the Detroit Lions 23-14. The victory kept the Packers alone in first place in the Western Conference. Starr tossed 53 yards to Marv Fleming and 78 yards to Carroll Dale as the.Packers raced to a 17-0 lead against the Lions, frustrated all afternoon by fumbles and penalties. The Packers picked off two Milt Plum passes and recovered three Lion fumbles. One of the interceptions and two of the fumbles led to Chandler field goals. Chandler's boots were true from the 14, 22 and 31. He missed one from the 43. The Lions, behind Plum's passing and the inside pounding of Amos Marsh and Tom Nowatzke, pulled to within six points early in the fourth period as Marsh powered over from the eight to cap an 80-yard drive. Nowatzke scored the first Detroit touchdown with a one-yard plunge in the second period. The Packers struck the first time they got the ball as Starr passed to Fleming over the middle at the Detroit 45. Fleming shook a couple of defenders and raced for the touchdown. A fumble by Marsh on the Detroit 39 was recovered by the Packers' Ron Kostelnik. A seven-yard penalty tagged onto a Starr to Jim Taylor pass play pushed the ball to the Detroit 17. Chandler followed three plays with his first kick. - NFL "GOTW" highlights from game - original, 26 minutes (Quality 9) - Added June, 2009

After the teams exchanged touchdowns in the second half, Denver kicker Jim Turner made a 44-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 24-21 lead. Then on the Steelers ensuing possession, Jackson intercepted a pass from Bradshaw to set up another Turner field goal. Controversial play on Rob Lytle's goal line fumble which To this day the debate over this play rages, with Raider fans bitterly swearing it cost them a shot at victory, while Bronco fans say at best it was merely equalizing what should have been a sure Denver touchdown scored when the Officials rule WR Jack Dolbin and trapped a pass he took in for a score despite replay's clearing showing he hand cleanly caught the ball. - Upgraded March, 2009

(11-11-85) San Francisco 49ers @ Denver Broncos - MNF - snowball game - It was a must-win for Denver, as they needed to keep pace with the Raiders in the race for the AFC Western Division title. The game would become a classic. Late in the 4th QTR, the Broncos trailed 16-14 - a deficit that would have potentially been greater if not for one of the most infamous plays in team history. Earlier in the game, 49ers kicker Ray Wersching had missed a short FG attempt. But it wasn't just any ordinary miss. Just as he was about to strike the ball, a snowball hurled by a fan in the stands landed right next to his plant foot. The white puff of exploding snow distracted Wersching, sending his kick wide of the goalposts. This now-legendary play set the stage for anther Elway late-game rally. The QB coolly directed a nine-play, 63-yard drive that moved the Broncos to the 49ers seven-yard line. With 1:27 left in the game, kicker Rich Karlis trotted onto the field and drilled a 24-yard field goal. The kick gave Denver a memorable 17-16 victory, keeping the team in the thick of the AFC playoff chase. San Francisco does get an excellent performance from RB Roger Craig (22-117). - added January, 2008

Elway threw a quick slant pass to Mark Jackson late in the third period for a 15-yard TD. It was only the third time the two teams had met in regular season play since Elway became the Denver starter. It was his first TD pass ever against the Packers. Denver finished at 5-11 and Green Bay at 6-10. David Treadwell kicked field goals of 22 and 31 yards in the first half to match the scoring of Green Bay's Chris Jacke who had first-half field goals of 37 and 24 yards. Denver's other touchdown was scored on a 5-yard run by Humphrey to break a 6-6 tie early in the third quarter. Winder, who earlier announced he would retire, was a sentimental starter ahead of Humphrey. The nine-year veteran, second on the Broncos' all-time rushing list, finished with 80 yards on 15 carries and brought the Denver crowd to its feet with a 19-yard run midway through the fourth quarter when the game appeared safe for the Broncos.. Reggie White made sure this one fell short. White broke through for back-to-back sacks of Elway in the final 1:50 to stop a Denver drive and the Packers held on for a 30-27 Sunday night victory. Le Lo Lang's interception, the Broncos' third of the second half, at the Green Bay 43 gave Denver one last chance with 2:05 to play, but White brought down Elway for losses of 8 and 14 yards, the final sack with 1:27 to go. Green Bay broke a three-game losing streak. Elway set career highs in pass completions with 33 and pass attempts with 59 and he finished with 367 yards. Vance Johnson caught a career-high 10 passes for 148 yards against the porous Packers defense. The Packers, behind Brett Favre's passing to Sterling Sharpe and Jackie Harris, scored on all six of their first-half possessions - three touchdowns and three field goals - for a 30-7 lead. But the Broncos stopped the Packers time after time in the second half, and the Packers couldn't contain Elway until the end. Mike Croel picked off a screen pass and returned it 22 yards for a score in the third quarter, pulling the Broncos within 30-14. Elway hit four different receivers in a 68-yard drive capped by Rod Bernstein's 2-yard run and it suddenly was 30-21. Elway later launched a 49-yard pass to Johnson to the Green Bay 16. However, in the third quarter, a short punt enabled Los Angeles to take over the ball at the Denver 35-yard line, and to set up McCallum's 26-yard touchdown. Another short punt by the Broncos allowed the Raiders to take over at the Denver 48-yard line, and Hostetler's 33-yard pass to tight end Ethan Horton enabled McCallum to record a 2-yard touchdown. After Broncos kicker Jason Elam made a 23-yard field goal to cut the lead, 35-24, in the fourth quarter, the Raiders marched 76 yards to score on McCallum's 1-yard touchdown to clinch the victory. Hostetler had one of the best performances of his career, completing 13 of 19 passes for 294 yards and 3 touchdowns. (12-27-97) 1997 AFC Wildcard - Jacksonville Jaguars @ Denver Broncos - "Revenge Tour Game #1" The Denver Broncos advanced to the AFC Divisional Playoff Round by literally running the Jacksonville Jaguars out of town as they piled up a club postseason-record 310 rushing yards en route to a 42-17 victory in front of 74,481 fans at Mile High Stadium. Denver set numerous team postseason records during the contest, including new standards for rushing attempts (49), total yards (511), points in a quarter (21; 4th qtr.), total points (42), first downs (28), rushing first downs (18) and third-down efficiency (75%), while the 237 yards allowed by the defense was the second-lowest total in Denver’s 21-game playoff history. The Broncos scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions, racking up a 21-0 lead on 32 offensive plays, during which time the Jaguars ran only six. Terrell Davis capped Denver’s opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Rod Smith punctuated the next when he reeled in a 43-yard touchdown pass from John Elway. The lead was increased to 21-0 when Davis—who set franchise postseason records for rushing attempts (31), rushing yards (184) and longest run from scrimmage (59) before leaving in the third quarter with bruised ribs— tied the franchise records for rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in a postseason game with his second of the day, this one from five yards out. The Jaguars answered by scoring the game’s next 17 points to make it a game, but the Broncos dominated from there as Derek Loville took over for the injured Davis and slashed his way to 103 yards (second-most by a Bronco in the postseason) on 11 attempts and scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns on runs of 25 and eight yards to tie the club touchdown record already achieved in the game by Davis. With Davis’ 184 rushing yards and Loville’s 103, Denver became just the third team in NFL postseason history to boast two 100-yard rushers in the same game. Additionally, Denver’s 40 minutes and 59 seconds of possession time and their 310 rushing yards both were the fifth-highest totals recorded in an NFL playoff game. - Added October, 2008

(01-04-98) 1997 AFC Divisional - Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs - "Revenge Game #2" The Denver Broncos posted their first road playoff win in 11 years—and only the second in franchise history—with a 14-10 victory over Kansas City in front of 76,965 fans at Arrowhead Stadium. Denver advanced to its first AFC Championship Game since 1991 on the strength of two Terrell Davis touchdowns— tying the franchise postseason record for the second week in a row—and a defensive effort that limited the Chiefs to just 10 points, tying for the fewest in club playoff history. Elway, with 170 passing yards on the day, moved into second place in NFL postseason history in that category, supplanting both Terry Bradshaw (3,833) and Jim Kelly (3,863) to finish the day at 3,940 career passing yards in the playoffs. - Added October, 2008

(01-11-98) 1997 AFC Championship - Denver Broncos @ Pittsburgh Steelers - Revenge Tour Game #3" The Denver Broncos advanced to their fifth Super Bowl—and their first since 1989—with a 24-21 victory at Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship Game in front of 61,382 fans at Three Rivers Stadium. The Broncos became just the fifth Wild Card team to advance to the Super Bowl since the Wild Card format was established in 1970. Denver quarterback John Elway was intercepted by Levon Kirkland on the game’s second play, but the Steelers failed to capitalize when Norm Johnson’s 38-yard field goal attempt sailed wide to the left. Denver then got on the board when Davis—who would rush for 139 yards and become the club’s all-time postseason rushing leader—capped a six-play, 72-yard drive with an 8-yard scoring run on its second possession. Elway tied Roger Staubach for fourth place on the NFL’s alltime list for postseason touchdown passes (24) with his two on the day, and the Broncos’ three interceptions tied the franchise postseason record for most in a game. - (Quality 8.5)

(01-25-98) Super Bowl XXXII - Denver Broncos vs Green Bay Packers - Broncos upset the heavily favored Packers in what is considered one of the greatest Super Bowls ever. - Terrell Davis rushed for 157 yards and a Super Bowl-record three touchdowns to lead the Broncos to their first NFL championship and break the NFC's streak of Super Bowl victories at 13. The defending Super Bowl champion Packers took the opening kickoff and marched 76 yards in just over four minutes, scoring the first points on Brett Favre's 22-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman. The Broncos responded with a 10-play, 58-yard drive capped by Davis's 1-yard run to tie the game. Tyrone Braxton intercepted Favre two plays later, and John Elway scored on a third-and-goal play to begin the second quarter. Steve Atwater forced Favre to fumble three plays later, and Neil Smith recovered at the Packers' 33. Jason Elam converted a 51-yard field goal, the second longest in Super Bowl history, to give the Broncos a 17-7 lead with 12:21 left in the half. After an exchange of punts, the Packers produced a 17-play, 95-yard drive that consumed 7:26 and finished with Favre's 6-yard touchdown pass to Mark Chmura on third-and-5 with 12 seconds left in the half. Tyrone Williams forced and recovered Davis's fumble at the Broncos' 26 on the first play from scrimmage in the second half. However, the Broncos' defense kept the Packers out of the end zone as Ryan Longwell's 27-yard field goal tied the game with 11:59 left in the third quarter. After another exchange of punts, Elway's 36-yard pass to Ed McCaffrey keyed a 13-play, 92-yard drive capped by Davis's 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. Tim McKyer recovered Freeman's fumble at the Packers' 22 on the ensuing kickoff return, giving the Broncos a golden opportunity, but Eugene Robinson intercepted Elway's pass in the end zone on the next play. Sparked by Robinson's play, the Packers took just four plays, three on passes to Freeman, to score the tying touchdown with 13:32 remaining. Each defense stiffened, forcing two punts, but the Broncos got great field position following Craig Hentrich's 39-yard punt to the Packers' 49 with 3:27 left and the score tied 24-24. Davis rushed for two yards on the first play, but Darrius Holland's 15-yard facemask penalty moved the ball to the Packers' 32. Elway threw a 23-yard pass to Howard Griffith two plays later, and after a holding penalty, Davis rushed 17 yards to the Packers' 1 with 1:47 left. After a timeout, Davis waltzed into the end zone to give Denver a 31-24 lead with 1:45 remaining. Freeman returned the kickoff 22 yards to the Packers' 30, and Favre completed 22- and 13-yard screen passes to Dorsey Levens to reach the Broncos' 35 with 1:04 left. But after a 4-yard pass to Levens and incompletions to Freeman and Brooks, John Mobley knocked away Favre's pass to Chmura with 32 seconds left to give the Broncos the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Elway was 12 of 22 for 123 yards, with an interception. Favre was 25 of 42 for 256 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Freeman had nine receptions for 126 yards. Davis was named the game's most valuable player. - (3 discs) (Quality 9)

Favre, who three times this season rallied his team to a comeback victory in the final two minutes despite a sore thumb on his throwing hand, was only 7-for-23 for 120 yards in, statistically, his worst performance as a pro. "I didn't expect to play like this," said Favre, the three-time league MVP. "I didn't expect to lose like this. Games like this happen It was ugly. This is a character check. Ahman Green reeled off a 98-yard touchdown run and Brett Favre completed a hard week in which he buried his father to lead Green Bay. The Packers had little hope of playing into January only minutes earlier. They celebrated wildly on the sideline after their crowd, listening on radios, broke into frenzied elation over the fourth-down pass in Arizona. Denver rested its starters for its playoff game next Sunday in Indianapolis. The Packers will host the Seattle Seahawks (10-6) and former coach Mike Holmgren on Sunday. The Packers beat the Seahawks 35-13 at home on Oct. 5. 2006

(10-29-06) WK 8 Indianapolis Colts @ Denver Broncos - Last team with the ball wins sounds like a cliché, but it summed up so many games the 2006 Colts played. This late afternoon classic was no exception. The Broncos had the lead at the half, 14-6. The Colts went on a long drive to start the second half, and then converted a short field after recovering a Jake Plummer fumble for a 20-14 lead. The infamous run defense then almost took over for the Colts. They gave up a rushing score at the end of the 3rd quarter and trailed again 21-20. Vinatieri nailed a long FG, but the Broncos rammed the ball down the field for a 28-23 lead with less than 7 to play. Manning and Wayne responded by completely abusing a young Denver corner and with 3:56 to play, the Colts took a 31-28 lead after a 2 point conversion. Gilbert Gardner struck back by abandoning his hole and letting Denver rip off a 48 yard run. Fortunately, the defense stiffened, and Denver settled for a long field goal and a tie with just 1:49 to play. 1:49 is waaaay to long to give #18 however, and unfortunately for the Denver, Darrent Williams was still on the field. Manning calmly moved the Colts down field to set up a game winning field goal try from Adam Vinatieri with just two seconds on the clock. By the time the dust had settled, the Colts were 7-0 for the second straight season. - Includes commercials (Quality 8.5) - added May, 2011

(10-29-07) Green Bay Packers @ Denver Broncos - MNF - OT - Packers find a running back and win in a Favre-erly fashion. On the first play of OT, after the Packers won the coin flip, Favre would end the game in dramatic fashion by hitting Greg Jennings in stride on a bomb for an 82-yard TD. Favre would hit two such bombs on the day a week after being critisized for underthrowing two passes that were intercepted against Washington. The first bomb was a perfect throw to James Jones, on the first play of the Packers second possession, that would go for 79-yards after some great running by Jones. On the day Favre completed 21 of 27 passes (to eight receivers) for 331 yards and two touchdowns, for a season-high 142.4 passer rating, earning him ‘FedEx Air Player Of The Week’. Favre threw only one incompletion after halftime and with his performance, is the first player in Packers history to throw two TD passes of 75+ yards in one game. Favre has 13 career TD passes of 75+ yards, the most for any player in NFL history. Ryan Grant would take over in the 2nd Qtr at RB after DeShawn Wynn left with a shoulder injury. Grant would rush for 104 yds without even having a carry in the first Qtr. and become the first 100-yd rusher for the Packers all year. Gregg Jennings caught six passes for a career-high 141 yards and a game winning 82-yard score in overtime. It marked the third 100-yard performance of Jennings career. James Jones posted his first career 100-yard game and earned ‘Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Week’ honors, catching three passes for 107 yards, including a career-long 79-yard touchdown. It marked the longest TD catch by a Packers rookie since 1954 when Max McGee caught an 82-yarder - added January, 2008

2008

(08-22-08) Green Bay Packers @ Denver Broncos - Preseason - Aaron Rodgers went from pathetic one week to just about perfect the next. Brett Favre's replacement bounced back from a bad game at San Francisco to complete 18 of 22 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' win over Denver on Friday night. Rodgers led four scoring drives in his five possessions and was 16-for-19 for 178 yards against the Broncos' starters, including a 10-yard touchdown to Donald Driver on the game's opening drive. He added a 1-yard sneak for a score against the Broncos' reserves to open the second half before giving way to rookie Brian Brohm. Broncos QB Jay Cutler was effective if not as accurate, leading Denver to scores on all three of its first-half possessions. One was a 99-yard touchdown march that chewed up most of the second quarter, and another was an 80-yard drive in all of 16 seconds. After completing his first dozen passes against Dallas a week ago, Cutler was wild against the Packers, completing just 6 of 13 throws for 115 yards.
