Denver scored first after John Schultz's blocked punt set up running back Rob Lytle's 7-yard rushing touchdown. Pittsburgh responded with quarterback Terry Bradshaw's 1-yard rushing touchdown. But in the second quarter, Jackson picked up a fumble by Steelers running back Franco Harris and returned it 35 yards to the Pittsburgh 10-yard line. On play later, running back Otis Armstrong ran the ball into the end zone to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead. Harris later tied the game before halftime with a 1-yard touchdown run. After the teams exchanged touchdowns in the second half, Denver kicker Jim Turner made a 44-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 24-21 lead. Then on the Steelers ensuing possession, Jackson intercepted a pass from Bradshaw to set up another Turner field goal. Jackson later recorded his second interception of the game, leading to wide receiver Jack Dolbin's 34-yard touchdown reception to put the game away. (12-26-77) 1977 NFC Divisional - Minnesota Vikings @ L.A. Rams - "The Mud Bowl" The Rams had easily defeated an aging Vikings team in the regular season, and after years of frustrating playoff losses in the cold of Green Bay and Minnesota, the Rams finally had a home playoff game against a cold weather team. But as luck would have it, Los Angeles was engulfed in a torrential rainstorm. In the game known as the "Mud Bowl", running back Chuck Foreman led the Vikings to a victory by recording 101 rushing yards in a torrential rainstorm. Minnesota Head Coach Bud Grant's strategy was to have quarterback Bob Lee throw early before the field lost traction. The Vikings scored first on Foreman's 5-yard touchdown run which capped a 70-yard drive. From that point on until the fourth quarter, both teams remained scoreless while the field turned into a quagmire. The Rams had two chances to score, but quarterback Pat Haden threw an interception in the end zone and kicker Rafael Septien missed a field goal. Then early in the final period, Sammy Johnson scored on a 1-yard rushing touchdown. With less than a minute left in the game, Haden threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Harold Jackson to cut the score 14-7. The Rams then recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Haden threw another interception to end the game. - Upgraded March, 2009

Minnesota again started quarterback Bob Lee, who was playing for the injured Fran Tarkenton. Dallas took the early lead after defensive end Harvey Martin's fumble recovery set up wide receiver Golden Richards' 32-yard touchdown reception. In the second quarter, another fumble recovery by Martin led to a 46 yard drive, which featured Danny White's 22-yard run on a fake punt and running back Robert Newhouse's 5-yard rushing touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Cowboys linebacker Thomas Henderson forced Vikings punt returner Manfred Moore to fumble and it was recovered by Dallas tight end Jay Saldi. After the Vikings opened up the scoring with a field goal, Los Angeles marched 59 yards to score on quarterback Pat Haden's 9-yard touchdown pass to Willie Miller. However, Minnesota tied the game 6 seconds before halftime when quarterback Fran Tarkenton threw a 1-yard touchdown to Ahmad Rashad. From that point on, the Rams controlled the rest of the game. The Bills were again poised to tie the game and set up an overtime period after driving 50 yards to the Bengals’ 20 with just over three minutes left, but a costly delay-of-game penalty on fourth down led to giving the ball back to Cincinnati. Anderson completed 14 of 21 for 192 yards, and TE Dan Ross recorded a game-high 6 receptions for 71 yards. Bengals QB Ken Anderson set Super Bowl records (since surpassed) for completions (25) and completion percentage (73.5), and his 300 passing yards nearly doubled the 157 by 49ers QB Joe Montana, the game’s MVP. But Cincinnati suffered 4 turnovers to San Francisco’s 1, and 3 of those giveaways led to 17 first-half points for the 49ers, who led 20-0 at intermission. Leading 20-7, San Francisco staged a memorable goal-line stand late in the third quarter, stopping Cincinnati for no gain on three straight plays from the 1-yard line. (01-09-83) 1982 1st RD AFC Super Bowl Tournament - New York Jets @ Cincinnati Bengals - The 7-2 Bengals were the AFC’s No. 3 seed in the "Super Bowl Tournament," a 16-team playoff system organized after the strike-shortened regular season. It was the first playoff victory since the 1968 season for the Jets, who were the No. 6 seed. New York RB Freeman McNeil rushed for 202 yards and a TD against the Cincinnati’s No. 3-ranked rush defense, and he also tossed a second-quarter TD pass. Jets FS Darrol Ray set an NFL postseason record for longest INT return (since broken) with a 98-yarder for a TD in what was a particularly demoralizing fourth quarter for the Bengals. The Cowboys scored first after a 75-yard drive led to a 27-yard field goal by kicker Rafael Septien. But Washington then scored on an 84-yard drive that was capped by quarterback Joe Theismann's 19-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Charlie Brown. In the second quarter, Dallas' Rod Hill lost a fumble on a punt return, setting up a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Redskins running back John Riggins (36-140-2). Late in the second quarter, Cowboys quarterback Danny White suffered a concussion and was replaced by Gary Hogeboom. Hogeboom threw two touchdowns in the third quarter, while Riggins scored on a 4-yard run. With the Redskins leading 21-17 in the final period, linebacker Mel Kaufman intercepted a pass from Hogeboom, setting up Washington kicker Mark Moseley's 29-yard field goal with 6:55 left to play. Then, defensive lineman Dexter Manley tipped Hogeboom's pass to lineman Darryl Grant, who returned it 10 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

(12-31-83) 1983 NFC Divisional - Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers - Playoff Thriller - Despite being a seven point underdog at San Francisco, Detroit outplayed the 49ers all afternoon. The Lions totalled 412 offensive yards to San Francisco's 291. Starter Gary Danielson was interecpted twice in the early going and both led to 49er touchdowns. Three Ed Murray field goals, including a playoff record 54-yarder at the end of the first half, made it 14-9 at the intermission. In the final quarter, Billy Sims scored twice to put Detroit ahead 23-17. He gained 114 yards on 20 carries during the afternoon. With just 1:23 left, Joe Montana hit Freddie Solomon with a 14-yard TD pass, giving San Francisco a one-point edge. Danielson expertly moved the Lions back up the field, completing four of five passes. With five seconds remaining, and the ball on the 49er 25-yard line, Murray was wide to the right on a 43-yard field goal attempt. Danielson was 24 of 38 for 236 yards during the day but was intercepted five times. Leonard Thompson, who started his first game since being injured Nov. 20, caught six passes for 74 yards. - added December, 2007
